De sluis is 427 meter lang, 55 meter breed en 16,44 meter diep, vergelijkbaar met de sluizen van het Panamakanaal. De bouw ervan heeft tot doel de economische activiteiten in zowel de Zeeuws-Vlaamse als de Vlaamse regio&#8217;s te stimuleren door de toegang tot de havens van Terneuzen en Gent te verbeteren. Daarnaast zorgt de verhoogde capaciteit van de sluis voor kortere wachttijden voor binnenvaartschepen. Het project wordt uitgevoerd in opdracht van de Vlaams-Nederlandse Scheldecommissie en door het consortium Sassevaart.
